Concerns Raised Over Support for Qatar by Right-Wing Media Figures
Americans are drawn to programs like “The Liz Wheeler Show” largely because Wheeler is perceived as a reliable voice. She takes her role seriously, especially when it comes to addressing perceived betrayals within right-wing media.
Wheeler pointed out that some individuals, who are seen as conservatives, have started to circulate lengthy endorsements of Qatar and its government. Rob Smith, a former U.S. Army soldier, shared his experience, stating, “My first trip to Qatar was an eye-opener.” He expressed that his preconceived notions were challenged and that asking direct questions to officials was a crucial part of his visit.
In his message shared on X, Smith highlighted the differences he saw compared to his time in Iraq and noted his earlier misconceptions about Qatar. His post concluded with a picture of him enjoying the view from a balcony.
Wheeler reacted to this by questioning the sincerity behind such posts. “My gut reaction was, ‘Shouldn’t I register as a foreign lobbyist after reading this, Rob?’” she remarked, suggesting a potential conflict of interest.
Similarly, influencer Emily Wilson shared her moment in Qatar, accompanied by a photo that echoed Smith’s themes. In her viral post, she mentioned how visitors from around the world come to experience events like Formula 1 in Qatar, echoing sentiments about the country being a major tourist hub.
Wilson’s remarks took a more personal turn, expressing relief at feeling safe in a place devoid of crime. She even criticized those who voice skepticism, implying that their negativity stems from jealousy.
Wheeler, however, expressed misgivings about the sudden positivity towards Qatar from these influential figures, especially considering that Smith identifies as gay—an identity that is criminalized under Qatari law. She elaborated on the restrictions in Qatar, calling out the contradictions. “It seems disingenuous for them to advocate so passionately for a place that punishes their very existence,” she noted, citing legal prohibitions against open expressions of religion other than Islam and the criminalization of same-sex relationships.
Wheeler concluded by criticizing the justice system in Qatar, asserting that it favors elites while oppressing ordinary citizens, drawing a parallel to the endorsements issued by Smith and Wilson.
