Study Suggests Cheese May Improve Sleep Quality
Good news for cheese enthusiasts: a recent study suggests a possible correlation between cheese consumption and improved health, particularly regarding sleep.
Published in the December issue of the Sleep Medicine journal, the research indicates that higher cheese intake might be associated with a decreased risk of sleep apnea, a condition that can lead to interruptions in breathing during sleep.
The researchers noted that while previous studies have explored the health benefits of cheese, this investigation specifically looked into the relationship between cheese and sleep apnea. The presence of essential nutrients in cheese—like calcium and protein—could potentially affect both metabolic and cardiovascular health, which are linked to sleep apnea.
Utilizing data from the UK Biobank and the FinnGen Biobank, the researchers analyzed sleep apnea risk in relation to cheese consumption among participants.
The analysis involved health information from 400,000 individuals, revealing that those who consumed cheese had a 28% lower risk of sleep apnea compared to those who didn’t partake in cheese, as reported by Food & Wine magazine.
To carry out the research, they employed a method called Mendelian randomization, which examines causal relationships between various health factors. They also aimed to see if cheese impacts any of the 44 studied biomarkers, which measure characteristics like blood pressure.
The results indicated that cheese consumption affected 23 biomarkers, with six showing a direct correlation between cheese and a reduced likelihood of developing sleep apnea.
According to the researchers, this method aims to clarify how cheese intake might relate to sleep apnea and identify possible mediating biomarkers.
They stressed that these findings could be pivotal for public health strategies focused on reducing sleep apnea prevalence and its related health risks.
Dr. Kevin Shayani, a pulmonary expert from Northwell Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, mentioned that the study shows some link between cheese and reduced inflammation associated with sleep apnea.
“While this association is certainly exciting, it is far from perfect and should not give people free rein to consume excessive amounts of cheese and dairy products,” says Dr. Shayani.
He added that consuming cheese might provide protective benefits related to sleep apnea but emphasized the need to interpret these results cautiously. The study illustrates a correlation—not a definitive cause-and-effect relationship regarding cheese consumption and reduced risks of sleep apnea.
Dr. Shayani cautioned against overindulgence in cheese and dairy, noting that some varieties are more nutritious than others.
The Mayo Clinic also suggests that cheese can be part of a healthy diet, recommending low-fat options to manage calorie and saturated fat intake.
Sleep apnea is a serious medical condition and is linked to increased cardiovascular risks. Thus, recognizing its signs and symptoms is vital.
According to the Mayo Clinic, types of sleep apnea include obstructive sleep apnea, which occurs when throat muscles block airflow, and central sleep apnea, where the brain fails to signal adequately for breathing control.
Symptoms may include loud snoring, grogginess upon waking, and mood fluctuations.
While snoring is a common indicator of sleep apnea, there are other warning signs to consider, such as waking with a dry mouth, night sweats, and headaches.
For treatment, a variety of approaches exist, ranging from lifestyle changes like weight loss and altering sleeping positions to medical interventions, such as medications, surgical options, and devices that provide positive airway pressure.
