Controversial Anti-Breitbart Activist Appointed to Key Position in Burnham Administration: Report

New Appointment Amid Censorship Concerns in UK Politics

Reports indicate that a key anti-Breitbart advocate is set to take on a top position in the forthcoming UK government under former Manchester mayor Andy Burnham. This move could intensify the ongoing efforts for censorship within the Starmer administration.

Insiders from the Labour Party mentioned that Josh Symonds, the former MP for Makerfield, is expected to become the policy director at number 10 under Burnham, who may eventually ascend to the role of prime minister.

Symonds resigned his seat in May to facilitate Burnham’s entry into the House of Commons via a special by-election. In doing so, it strategically allowed Burnham to confront Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who faced significant setbacks following a defeat to Nigel Farage’s Reform UK Party in local elections.

Speculation suggests that Symonds’ resignation was somewhat strategic; many believe it was a calculated move to secure a position in Burnham’s government. His departure coincided with scrutiny over his pro-censorship stances, which had previously led to his ousting from his Cabinet Office deputy minister role two months earlier.

Before entering Parliament, Symonds directed Labour Together, a think tank established by political strategist Morgan McSweeney, who played a crucial role in advancing Starmer’s leadership.

Labour Together initially targeted far-left media, aiming to diminish the influence of Jeremy Corbyn’s sphere to clear the path for centrist figures like Starmer. They executed an advertiser boycott against outlets associated with Corbyn, an initiative later extended to right-wing media, including Breitbart News.

Paul Holden, a South African journalist, commented on the effectiveness of these campaigns, noting their success in destabilizing left-leaning news outlets, although Breitbart continues to operate.

This approach appears to have gained traction among Britain’s media and political establishments. However, it has drawn ire from the Trump administration in the US, which is now countering what it perceives as censorial forces in both the UK and the EU, including sanctions against Imran Ahmed of the Center for Countering Digital Hate.

Amid these developments, it’s suggested that Symonds enlisted a PR firm to investigate certain journalists from legacy media who reported on Labour Together’s undisclosed donations totaling roughly £730,000 during the McSweeney period. Reports have claimed that this information was hidden to facilitate a takeover of the party.

However, what was intended as a smear campaign backfired when it was discovered that the information, allegedly acquired from Russian hackers, was fabricated. Yet, reports indicate that Symonds may have already shared this misinformation with British intelligence in a bid to suppress critical media coverage.

Although these revelations led to Symonds’ recent resignation from government, they may not impede his anticipated role in Burnham’s administration. An anonymous Labour MP stated, “He would definitely be the right person to be Downing Street’s policy director. His background is as a very sharp policy geek.” There’s a sense that he and Burnham share a strong rapport.

While some within the party express gratitude for Symonds’ previous sacrifices, including resigning his seat, others harbor skepticism. One Labour insider remarked, “I think the whole thing was a farce. I don’t particularly want him in the role because his resignation makes us look foolish to the public.” There’s a divide on whether his past in Labour Together aligns with the change they wish to represent.
