Controversial hockey commentator Don Cherry clarifies his puzzling sign-off

Don Cherry’s Podcast Run is Not Over Yet

One of hockey’s most vibrant personalities isn’t ready to step back just yet.

Don Cherry, who garnered fame through his 33 years as a broadcaster on “Hockey Night in Canada” before a contentious exit, created a bit of a stir by signing off on the 313th episode of “Don Cherry’s Grapevine Podcast.”

At 91 years old, he announced, “Well, Tim, this is our last show,” as he wrapped up the episode. “Thank you for listening. Toodle-oo!”

It initially sounded like the conclusion of his over four-year journey as a notable voice in Canadian hockey, but Cherry quickly clarified.

“I’ll be back next season,” he reassured listeners, according to a report. “We were going to say goodbye this year. We always do that at the end of the season. There aren’t any more games, so no podcasts in the summer. I believe that’s what we were trying to say.”

The former defenseman and coach started his podcast with his son Tim after his dismissal from Sportsnet six years ago.

“We’ve been amazed at how people from all over the world tune in,” Tim, who also scouts for the Ontario Hockey League, shared during the finale. “We’ve reached 6.5 million downloads, which is really impressive.”

Don Cherry, often referred to as “Grapes,” has had a hand in nearly every facet of the hockey world.

He played 14 years in the AHL during the 1950s and ’60s, including a notable NHL appearance with the Bruins in 1955.

Later, he coached the Boston Bruins from 1974 to 1979, guiding them to two Stanley Cup finals, and had brief tenures with the Colorado Rockies and the New Jersey Devils.

In 1980, Cherry transitioned to a studio analyst role at CBC, where he remained for three decades.

He became well-known for his brash and colorful demeanor, whether it was on air, during his 30-minute segment “Don Cherry’s Grapevine,” or in any public setting.
