Convicted felon opens fire on armed homeowner who confronts him burglarizing car, cops say. But homeowner is the better shot.

An armed Florida homeowner confronted a convicted felon who was breaking into his driveway in late December, police said. But after the felon fired at the homeowner, the homeowner returned fire and injured the suspect, police said.

The Palm Bay Police Department announced that the suspect in question has been identified as 26-year-old Javon Williams. WOFL-TV reported. Palm Bay is about four miles south of Melbourne on the state's east coast.

Williams has three other arrests in 2024, one in 2023, four in 2020, two in 2017 and two in 2016, according to jail records.

Officers told the department they responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle on Dec. 27 in the area of ​​the 500 block of Titan Road SE. According to WOFL, one caller said the vehicle in question was a silver SUV parked in front of the caller's home.

While en route to the reported location, police received a report of a similar vehicle involved in gunfire at another residence on the same street, police said.

Officers told WOFL they found shell casings in the road after heading to the scene of a reported shooting.

The resident told police that his Ring camera alerted him to activity in his driveway, so he left his home with a gun and saw two men drive past his vehicle, police said.

Residents confronted two people, one of whom fired shots at the residents, who also returned fire, WOFL said, citing a police report. The gunfight broke out around 1 a.m. WKMG-TV reportedadding that the homeowner was “okay” afterwards.

Police at the scene later learned that a person who had been shot arrived at a nearby emergency room, the department said, adding that police identified the person as Williams.

Police said Williams was shot while he and his friend were near another location, but officers found no shell casings or evidence of gunfire near that location, and Williams' wounds were He said that doesn't match the story Williams told police. said WOFL.

The police report said Williams told officers he was taking the Uber ride at the request of his girlfriend, but the girlfriend told police that was not true, the department said.

Police said surveillance camera footage shows two men searching two separate vehicles, one of which begins firing shots at residents before another person sitting in the driver's seat of the car appears. It is said that he was seen chasing the victim away.

Officers say Williams was wearing the same pants in the video as he was at the hospital, but police say Williams denies any involvement in the incident and has refused to provide DNA.

After Williams was safely released from the hospital, police said they tested the gunshot wound for residue, which came back positive.

Jail records show Williams has been charged with numerous felonies related to the shootout. Those include armed robbery with a firearm, aggravated assault with a firearm, discharging a firearm from a vehicle and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, the department said. WKMG said a judge revoked Williams' bail and said he could face a life sentence.
