DALLAS — Cooper Flagg Makes NBA History
In an exciting Thursday night game, Dallas rookie Cooper Flagg shattered the NBA scoring record for teenagers, racking up 49 points in a narrow 123-121 loss to Charlotte. This achievement allowed him to surpass the previous franchise record he held with Mark Aguirre, who notably left the game at halftime.
“Mark Aguirre is a legend, and it’s a remarkable night for him and everyone involved with the organization,” Flagg, who celebrated his 19th birthday last December, expressed. “I feel incredibly blessed. It’s just amazing.”
“We witnessed something special,” remarked Mavericks coach Jason Kidd. “To see history unfold at halftime and watch a young player excel like that is incredible. Having Mark present for this record-breaking moment added to its significance.”
Another highlight for Flagg was sharing his debut NBA game with his former Duke roommate, Conn Knuppel, who was also a standout. Knuppel, chosen fourth in the draft, scored a personal best of 34 points and clinched the game with two free throws in the closing seconds after Flagg’s foul.
“Cooper was phenomenal, easily the best player on our team tonight,” Knuppel said, celebrating Flagg’s performance. “He’s a fantastic player destined for greatness.”
Flagg affectionately called Knuppel his “brother for life,” further emphasizing their close bond.
Interestingly, this record-setting performance came after Flagg’s previous high of 42 points, achieved during a 140-133 defeat against Utah last month. Historically, Cliff Robinson set the NBA teen scoring record at age 19 on March 9, 1980.
Flagg’s night didn’t start off spectacularly. In the first quarter, he only managed to score one out of four attempts while the Mavericks trailed by 15 points. However, things took a turn in the second quarter. He went on an impressive scoring spree, hitting 8 of 9 shots and registering 23 points in that period alone.
Meanwhile, Knuppel took the lead, sinking multiple three-pointers early on. “When a skilled player like that steps onto the court, it’s never good news for the opponents,” Flagg noted about Knuppel, who turned 20 in August. Their back-and-forth kept the energy high throughout the game.
As two of the top Rookie of the Year contenders, Flagg and Knuppel both had stellar performances, with Flagg averaging 19.5 points per game and Knuppel at 18.9. They are set to face off again on March 3 in Charlotte, and it will be quite the challenge to replicate the intensity of this matchup.
“Tonight will be a memory we’ll cherish for the rest of our lives,” Flagg reflected on the momentous game.
