New York City Arts College, a Cooper Union, is trying to block the Trump administration's efforts to force foreign students accused of supporting Hamas.
“News of arrests by federal agents of Columbia graduates and the attacks on two Columbia dorm rooms last week are very troublesome,” began an email sent by student vice dean Grace Kendall and vice president of enrollment Troy Cogburn.
“In addition, the State Department has announced a new initiative to use AI to review student visa holders' social media accounts to identify individuals who appear to support Hamas and other designated terrorist groups. Please know that we are closely monitoring these situations,” he continued.
The email warned students of “unsafe” immigration status regarding risks related to the protest and social media posts about protests. He also announced that the administration would distribute pamphlets “know your rights” to help students fear deportation, and listed members of faculty who could provide support.

“Cooper Union does not tolerate or support the recognition of terrorist groups or their actions. Our focus is 100% on supporting a full community of students, including international students. The purpose of our communications was not to support students' actions or positions, but rather to educate students.
The university has emerged as a symbol of a national surge in anti-Semitism on university campuses. In October 2023, weeks after Hamas launched a brutal terrorist attack in which it saw the most Jews have been killed in a day since the Holocaust, Jewish students were forced to take shelter to the library as they were surrounded by unruly mobs of anti-Israel demonstrators who beat the doors and slammed the windows of the space.
The Lower East Side School was severely rebuked last month by a Manhattan judge, and after arguing that the lawsuit filed by students in question should be dismissed on the grounds that the building should be left behind or hidden in a room above the library.
“The court is disappointed by Cooper Union's proposal that Jewish students should hide on the second floor, leave the building, and lock the library doors is sufficient to fulfill their obligations under Title VI. These events were not made in 1943.

A pamphlet distributed by Cooper Union advises students to be “serene and polite” if stopped by law enforcement in protest, and informs them that they have the right to refuse a police search.
The Trump administration has made headlines with the famous deportation of foreigners accused of violating visas or green cards by supporting terrorist groups.
