Police allege a Florida woman used the now-infamous trilogy of words: “Delay, Deny, Abandon” to threaten health insurance companies for denying claims.
Police in Lakeland, Florida, on Tuesday charged 42-year-old Brianna Boston with threatening to commit a mass shooting or terrorist act. WFLA-TV reported.
“Medical companies are evil, so they deserve karma from the world for playing games.”
When the city of Boston called Blue Cross Blue Shield about a recent denial of a health insurance claim, the company said it told them to “delay, deny, and withhold” and hung up on them. You are next,” the station said.
These words were reportedly engraved on a shell casing found at the scene of the targeted shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last week, apparently in an attempt to deny his health insurance claim. It seems like you're referring to tactics. This word is similar to the main title of the 2010 film. book “Delays, Denials, and Defenses: Why Insurance Companies Don’t Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It.”
According to an arrest affidavit, police said the FBI contacted them about the alleged threats made during the call, and WFLA said the entire call was recorded.
Investigators said they heard Boston say, “Delay, deny, stand down” near the end of the call. You guys are next,” the station reported, adding that the affidavit states those three words are recognized nationally as a phrase “directed at insurance companies.”
According to WLFA, police interviewed Boston at her home in Lakeland, where she admitted to using such language on the phone and told detectives that “medical companies are playing games and that they are evil.” Because of this, it's only natural that we receive karma from the world,” he added.
The agency said Boston told detectives he used the phrase “because it's in the news right now,” adding that he learned about it because of the shooting death of the United Healthcare CEO.
Boston also said she did not own a firearm and was “not a danger to anyone,” WFLA said, citing police.
The agency said investigators believe Boston intended to blackmail insurance companies by “taking advantage of the murder of the United Healthcare CEO,” the affidavit states. He added that a person has been charged with threatening to commit a mass shooting and terrorist act.
According to WFLA, the judge set her bail at $100,000, saying, “Given the current situation in our country, I believe $100,000 bail is appropriate.”
The Blaze News on Wednesday reported that law enforcement was alarmed by graffiti, flyers and online posts that not only supported Thompson's death but also threatened other CEOs.
