Tragic Death of Coral Springs Deputy Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen

Nancy Metayer Bowen, aged 38, who served as the deputy mayor of Coral Springs, Florida, was tragically shot in her home on Wednesday morning. This incident is currently being treated as a case of domestic violence.

Authorities promptly arrested her husband, Stephen Bowen, 40, identifying him as the main suspect. During a press conference later that day, police confirmed his custody and indicated that initial evidence suggests an “apparent domestic violence incident.”

According to a police affidavit, Metayer-Bowen suffered multiple shotgun wounds. Her body was discovered wrapped in a blanket and secured within a garbage bag in an upstairs bedroom. Additionally, law enforcement utilized a license plate reader to locate Stephen Bowen’s vehicle.

On Thursday, a judge denied bail for Stephen Bowen, who remains detained at the Broward County Jail facing charges of premeditated murder and tampering with physical evidence.

Investigators believe the vice mayor was killed before her husband fled to Plantation, about 19 miles to the south, where he was later apprehended at an apartment complex.

The Coral Springs government expressed their sorrow, stating, “We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer.” They added that she was an inspiring leader whose impact on the community was profound. The statement emphasized the importance of keeping her family and loved ones in thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Metayer Bowen, an environmental scientist and first-generation Haitian American, made history as the first Black woman elected to the Coral Springs Commission in 2020. She previously interned in Barack Obama’s administration after obtaining her degree from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Moreover, she was appointed as Florida’s “Caribbean Vote Director” in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election.

On Wednesday evening, Representative Byron Donald, a prominent candidate for the Florida gubernatorial race, expressed his heartbreak over the shocking news, relaying his condolences through social media.

“Praying for her family, loved ones, and the Coral Springs community during this devastating time,” he shared. “May justice be swift and may her memory be a blessing.”

The Bowen family released a statement mourning their sister, describing her as a devoted public servant committed to improving lives. They thanked the community for respecting their privacy during this time of grief, emphasizing the importance of celebrating her impactful life.

Statistics from the Council on Criminal Justice reveal that around 60% of female homicide victims in the U.S. are killed by current or former intimate partners, while this figure drops to about 11% for male victims.
