Cornyn Backs It, Hawley Anticipates Vote

Trump’s Nominee Gathers Support Despite Opposition

On Tuesday, President Trump’s nominee gained significant momentum, even though Senator Tom Tillis (R-NC) expressed his opposition to the nomination.

Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) spoke to reporters in the Capitol, stating he would endorse Ed Martin, Trump’s nominee, affirming it was more a matter of “when” than “if.” Cornyn noted, “When he comes to vote, I’m going to support him,” implying his deference to the President’s choices.

It wasn’t entirely clear if Cornyn was referencing the Senate Judiciary Committee vote, but this endorsement could be crucial for Martin’s nomination. Importantly, Cornyn has backing from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

A source involved in the confirmation process indicated that “Senator Cornyn needs to build on his support signal and support him as a Sherpa across the finish line. Trump is watching.”

The term “Sherpa” informally refers to individuals tasked with guiding candidates through the Senate confirmation process, often those with established relationships.

Martin’s momentum increased further when Senator Josh Hawley announced his hope for Martin’s confirmation. “We’re going to get to the vote, and I think he’s going to pass. To be honest, I don’t quite know what he will do,” Hawley shared during an appearance on Steve Bannon’s Warroom podcast. He emphasized that “the president has made it clear that Ed Martin is his number one priority.”

“He’s the president’s choice,” Hawley reiterated, attempting to rally his Republican colleagues’ support. “Listen, I haven’t mentioned anything that I haven’t personally conveyed; I’m all in for this guy.”

Interestingly, Tillis met with Martin on Monday evening, with sources suggesting that the meeting went well according to White House officials. However, shortly after, Tillis informed Senate leaders and White House representatives of his opposition to Martin’s appointment.

The White House is reportedly still in discussions with Tillis and other senators regarding the nomination.

Alex Pfeiffer, Trump’s top assistant communications director, commented, “Ed Martin is a great U.S. lawyer for DC and will continue to implement the presidential law and order agenda in Washington. He’s a worthy person for the job, and we look forward to confirming him.”
