Sen. Cornyn Engages in Political Battle in Texas
Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) is gearing up for a tough race against Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) as he seeks to secure his position within his Texas constituency.
On Tuesday, Cornyn publicly challenged FBI Director Kash Patel, urging assistance in locating Democrats who had left the country in protest. By Thursday, both Cornyn and Texas Governor Greg Abbott confirmed that the FBI was backing these efforts.
This approach seems designed to solidify support among the conservative base in his state, especially as he prepares for a challenging battle against Paxton.
“I think this is a good chance for Cornyn to tackle issues that resonate with voters. When opportunities arise, it’s important to seize them,” a political observation noted.
“In a campaign like this, you can’t always control what happens. But you can control your responses,” they added. “This is exactly what he needs to do.”
Supporters of Cornyn, including the National Republican Senatorial Committee, are promoting his actions with new digital ads titled “Cornyn Fights – Paxton Folds.”
As this situation unfolds, Cornyn and his allies have taken jabs at Paxton, pointing out that the attorney general was attending to matters abroad while significant events were occurring back home.
In late July, Paxton had been in Scotland meeting with former President Trump at Turnberry Golf Course.
On social media, Governor Abbott pointed out Paxton’s absence with a remark questioning his presence in the office. He urged Paxton to focus on his role rather than vacationing abroad.
An unidentified Republican strategist described Paxton’s European stay as “a missed opportunity,” although noted it was “not necessarily a vulnerability.”
“The actions of Texas Democrats were expected,” said the strategist. They also mentioned that Cornyn, as a federal official, might feel a bit restricted compared to state officials like Paxton, who have more room to act.
Paxton has positioned himself as a vocal participant in the ongoing conflict. Initially, he dismissed the need for FBI involvement on a podcast, calling it “a purely state issue.” However, he later suggested that he would welcome federal support in a statement.
“I am fully supportive of using all methods to secure a quorum and holding accountable lawless Democrats who have abandoned their responsibilities to Texans,” Paxton expressed.
Utilizing his role as attorney general, Paxton has taken steps against the Texas Democrats and recently sought a judicial order as part of his efforts. He is also investigating claims that a political group tied to Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) is unlawfully financing out-of-state lawmakers.
“It’s really about the actions taken and having a voice, which doesn’t always require being physically present in Texas,” another observer noted.
Paxton’s political action committee has compiled media coverage and supporter reactions into a digital spot that was released recently.
As Cornyn prepares for this consequential battle for his political future, outside groups have begun to invest heavily in his campaign. Recent spending includes over $4 million from One Nation, a group linked to Senate GOP leadership, along with additional funds from other supportive organizations.
“These tactics are about capturing attention, especially from key figures like the President,” the strategist explained. “They’re trying to push his standing in the polls.”
Current polls show Cornyn consistently trailing Paxton by significant margins. However, Cornyn’s team believes they have enough time to bridge this gap, with hopes that endorsements from Trump could swing support his way for the upcoming primary.
“These skirmishes are just the lead-up to a much larger battle, with Cornyn trying to position himself advantageously among voters,” the strategist added.
