Senator Cornyn Seeks Trump’s Support Amidst Reelection Challenges
Senator John Cornyn, representing Texas, is gearing up for his reelection campaign next year while facing stiff competition from Attorney General Ken Paxton. In a recent conversation with NBC News, Cornyn mentioned he had discussed potential backing from former President Donald Trump.
“I’ve told him multiple times that he’s not yet ready to support me,” Cornyn revealed. “I believe if we ramp up our advertising and narrow the polling gap, he’ll consider it, but I can’t afford to wait.” He emphasized to Trump that his support could make a decisive difference in the race, saying, “If he backs me, the race will basically be over.”
Cornyn has a long history in the Senate, having served for over two decades. Before that, he was Texas’s Attorney General, a position now held by Paxton.
In a statement, Matt Mackowiak, a senior adviser for Cornyn’s campaign, highlighted the significance of Trump’s endorsement, asserting, “His support is unparalleled in modern Republican history.” He added that Cornyn and Trump have a strong friendship and that the senator maintains a voting record of 99.2% in alignment with Trump’s agenda.
Meanwhile, Paxton’s political journey seems to be complicated further. His wife, Senator Angela Paxton, announced on social media last week that she is seeking a divorce on what she described as “biblical grounds” after 38 years of marriage.
As the situation unfolds, Cornyn appears focused on his campaign while navigating these political dynamics. It will be interesting to see how Trump’s potential involvement plays out in the coming months.
