Warren Criticizes Paramount Global Over Trump Settlement

Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren has strongly condemned Paramount Global after the company decided to settle a lawsuit with President Donald Trump for $16 million, which she called a “meritless” case.

Warren criticized CBS’s parent company for allegedly placing profit above journalistic integrity, suggesting that such actions compromise the press’s credibility.

During her appearance on MSNBC’s “All In” program, she reiterated that the settlement seems a lot like bribery. This leads her to call for a formal investigation into potential violations of anti-bribery laws.

Warren stated, “With Paramount appeasing Donald Trump while seeking his administration’s approval for a major merger, this could be bribery in plain sight. They’ve also not responded to congressional inquiries, which raises further questions.”

In October 2024, Trump initiated legal action against CBS and Paramount Global, claiming that the “60 Minutes” show had unfairly edited an interview with Vice President Kamala Harris, violating Texas consumer protection regulations. The lawsuit invoked the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act, which is generally aimed at combatting misleading advertising and fraud.

The subsequent settlement required Paramount and CBS to pay the $16 million, but they opted not to apologize or express regret. Additionally, they later agreed to contribute another $20 million to Trump’s presidential library, according to Trump’s statements.

Trump remarked on the settlement, saying, “They have paid $16 million, and we expect to receive an additional $20 million, bringing the total to over $36 million. It’s another victory over the Fake News Media, which we hold accountable for their actions.”

Furthermore, Warren has announced plans to introduce legislation aimed at promoting transparency in donations related to presidential libraries, which she believes could help mitigate potential corruption.

In May, along with Senators Bernie Sanders and Ron Wyden, Warren sent a letter to Shari Redstone of Paramount Global. The senators contended that the company’s actions could signify unlawful behavior, implying that Paramount might be currying favor with the Trump administration in exchange for regulatory approval regarding its merger.

Wyden stated, “Paramount just effectively paid Trump for merger approval. When we regain power, I’ll push for federal charges. Until then, I believe state prosecutors should hold the executives accountable.”

Sanders added, “Settling a dubious lawsuit from Trump sets a dangerous precedent for the First Amendment and government overreach. This decision only encourages Trump to continue his attacks on the media, which he maligns as ‘the enemy of the people.’ It’s a troubling time for independent journalism and, honestly, a dark day for democracy.”

In response, Paramount Global has consistently maintained that the lawsuit is unrelated to any merger considerations and insists on following legal protocols as the case proceeds.

Also, FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr expressed that the lawsuit does not influence the agency’s review process either.
