Cory Asbury’s Halftime Show Plans Canceled

Christian singer Cory Asbury announced on Monday that his planned Super Bowl halftime show with Forrest Frank has been canceled, though there’s a chance it could happen next year.

Asbury, known for his songs like Reckless Love and Father’s House, shared the news in an Instagram post, coming about a week after he had proposed a worship-oriented alternative halftime event. This alternate show might have been broadcasted, offering viewers a chance to switch to the Asbury vs. Frank game during halftime.

“What started as a dream to exalt the name of Jesus during the greatest time of the year began to morph into something else, a distraction,” Asbury wrote. He went on to explain that, after much consideration and prayer, they chose not to move forward in this format, but it’s not off the table for the future.

He initially presented the idea in early October, shortly after the NFL announced Bad Bunny as the halftime performer, which raised some eyebrows due to his controversial music. Just days later, Turning Point USA announced their own alternate halftime event, dubbed the “All-American Halftime Show,” although their lineup has yet to be disclosed.

“This dream was never about a rivalry. It wasn’t us vs. Bad Bunny. It wasn’t us vs. Turning Point USA,” Asbury continued. “It’s really not about politics or proving a point. The goal was never competition, but worship. We want to keep our focus on Jesus and not get sidetracked by headlines or hype. We believe something wonderful can still come out of this, but we feel there’s another plan God has in mind.”

Asbury expressed gratitude towards those who offered venues and resources to support the cause, acknowledging their commitment to spreading the gospel. He also mentioned that he and Frank had talked with Turning Point officials but found their visions to be incompatible.
