A couple recently tested the limits of Costco’s return policy, returning a mattress they purchased five years ago, claiming it was “uncomfortable.”
The couple documented their return on TikTok, but initially weren’t sure Costco would let them return the items.
“In desperate times, you have to resort to desperate measures,” his wife, who posts videos under the handle @purrfectreads, captioned the video.
“I decided to test out a theory as to whether it’s possible to return items that have been in Costco for over 2 years without a receipt…” the caption added.
The video shows the mattress being loaded onto a cart and wheeled into Costco and pushed through the aisles.
In the video, the wife says she was “nervous” about returning the mattress, but Costco ultimately accepted the five-year-old mattress.
They didn’t have a physical copy of the original receipt, Costco Card Can be used to find original purchase.
The video shows the mattress being carried to the back of the store while the couple waits.

“We have [original] “We didn’t show them the receipt but they went through our account,” one TikTok user said in a comment.
The refund was applied to a Costco gift card, which the couple used to buy a new king-size mattress.
“Obviously, we paid the difference for a king size bed so technically we paid $300 for a king size bed. It was uncomfortable for 3 people (hubby, baby and me) to sleep in a queen size bed,” @purrfectreads wrote in the comments section of the video.
“Costco buys in bulk and cheap,” another TikTok user commented on the video. [so] “If they return the mattress, it’s not a big loss for them. It’s a good deal.”
Social media users appear divided on whether the return should have been accepted.
“I guess it would be ok to test it within a few weeks, but five years?” one user commented.
“People love this stuff and are the first to complain when stores start cracking down and changing the rules,” wrote another TikTok user.
“What’s there to be proud of in returning a stinky five-year-old mattress?” Social media User added.
FOX Business has reached out to Costco for comment.
In response to the negative comments, @purrfectreads tried to bring some clarity to the situation by pointing out that the mattress brand, Sealy, has a 10-year warranty.
Other users seemed encouraged by the return, with some saying they would consider returning their own Costco purchases.
“I have to do that too. I know I’ll be nervous but I’ll be when I go lol. Thanks for the video,” one user added.
“A dining table I bought from Costco 5 years ago had a weird crack in the leg. Not a normal wear and tear issue. I returned it. No problems,” another user commented.
“This is an advertisement. I’ll be buying from Costco from now on,” joked another.

Costco’s return policy does not stipulate that most items must be returned within a specified time period or in a specific condition.
