Costco’s Tariff Refunds Impact Pricing for Members

Costco announced on Thursday that it received $184 million in tariff refunds during its fourth quarter. Most of this amount has been reinvested to lower prices for members shopping at their warehouses.

The retail giant explained that these refunds allowed them to adjust prices on a variety of everyday products, including food, beverages, and other categories.

During the earnings call, CEO Ron Vachris noted that the company “received some initial tariff refunds in the fourth quarter, and we reinvested some of these dollars to give value back to our members.” He added that “this was predominantly through price reductions on several items in the latter part of the quarter, encompassing fresh produce, meat, beverages, and some non-food products like home furnishings and hardware.”

Costco’s CFO, Gary Millerchip, emphasized that they see these pricing adjustments as a way to deliver value to their members in light of the tariffs received. He mentioned, “Our goal was to make sure we spread those benefits to items that would have the most impact for members… many everyday items were affected.” He also pointed out that some investments were made in non-food areas that were influenced by earlier tariffs, particularly when the IEEPA tariffs were first implemented.

Millerchip detailed that out of the $184 million refund, $174 million was from refunds and $10 million from interest. This amount represents just over one-third of the total tariff refunds Costco anticipates receiving, and they’ve reportedly received a comparable sum in the first quarter.

Looking ahead, Millerchip said the company plans to continue reinvesting a major portion of the funds into enhancing member value. He mentioned, “As tariff refunds and their reinvestments are nonrecurring items, they will continue to impact our financial results in fiscal year 2027. We intend to provide similar information about the net effects in future quarterly earnings calls.”

In response to an inquiry about the tariffs’ influence on Costco’s product offerings last year, Vachris remarked that they had to pull several items from shelves and replace them with alternatives. He noted that the impact was significant in the first and second quarters but had eased by the third quarter, allowing operations to return to a more normal state.
