Costco’s Kirkland Chocolate Chips Make a Comeback
Costco is reviving a beloved yet previously discontinued sweet item from its Kirkland brand, much to the delight of dedicated shoppers who love a good deal.
The signature semisweet chocolate chips by Kirkland are back on the shelves after their hiatus since 2024. You see, back then, rising cocoa prices posed a significant challenge for the company, making it tough to maintain profitability on this product.
Reaction on Reddit has been quite animated. One user expressed disbelief, saying, “Please don’t mess with me…my store hasn’t had these in over a year.” It seems there’s a bit of skepticism about the availability of these chips, even as excitement grows.
Another Redditor chimed in, “I much prefer it to Nestlé. If they come back, that would be great!” It’s clear that the community has strong feelings about their chocolate chip preferences. Some people have voiced their disappointment with other options, like Ghirardelli and Guittard chocolate chips, which they find too expensive. “I like Ghirardelli better, but I’m concerned about the price,” noted a commenter in a related baking thread.
Reflecting on past purchases, one shopper shared a nostalgic moment: “I made my first purchase at Kroger right before the pandemic for $1 during a post-Christmas markdown sale. I’ll never forget that deal on the 10-ounce bag.” It’s those little memories that stick with you, right?
Reports indicate that shoppers in Texas, Connecticut, Oregon, Washington, and Virginia have spotted these semisweet chocolate chips back in their local stores. However, there hasn’t been any word on when they’ll be available nationwide again.
The chocolate crisis that led to the chips’ disappearance stemmed from an unprecedented supply shortage in the cocoa market. Back in 2024, harvest failures reduced global inventories to their lowest level in over three decades, driving prices to alarming heights. Although there were hints of a rebound, like a 33% increase in cocoa bean shipments to Ivory Coast, the overall market situation remains shaky. In fact, U.S. cocoa futures, which once hovered in the range of $2,500-$3,000 per tonne, skyrocketed to a staggering $11,500-$12,000 per tonne by late 2024.
As for Costco, they haven’t provided any immediate comments regarding the resurgence of these chocolate chips.
