A man was arrested at a Costco in South Carolina after, apparently, he crashed into a jewelry display while wielding a machete and a pickaxe. This incident unfolded as customers and employees intervened to restrain him, based on local news reports.
Greenville police were called to the Costco on Woodruff Road on Thursday in response to a report of an armed robbery, as reported by WSPA 7News, referencing the Greenville Police Department.
The suspect was identified as 24-year-old Jose Alejandro Giraldo. He allegedly broke into the store and smashed a display case at the jewelry counter.
At the time of the confrontation, Giraldo was reportedly armed with a machete and pickaxe, and he suggested that he had a gun.
Interestingly, initial callers described the weapon used against the display case as a hammer; however, police later confirmed it was indeed a machete and a pickaxe.
According to FOX Carolina, while one customer tried to help restrain Giraldo, they suffered injuries that required medical attention. The precise nature of those injuries hasn’t been made clear just yet.
Both media outlets reported that Giraldo now faces charges of armed robbery and third-degree assault and battery. Following the incident, his mug shot was released by the Greenville County Detention Center.
FOX Business has reached out to the Greenville Police for further information regarding this unusual incident.
