Costco will offer Ozempic and Wegovy for $499 each month.

Novo Nordisk announced on Friday that Costco will start selling monthly supplies of Ozempic and Wegovy for $499, specifically for uninsured members.

The trend of discounted prices is gaining traction, particularly as individuals showcase their physical transformations and health improvements, reflecting a growing awareness among Americans about GLP-1 weight loss drugs.

Heightened demand for these medications, alongside ongoing shortages and elevated prices, has prompted many to explore compounded versions, leading to calls for tighter federal regulations.

“We want to ensure patients receive authentic Wegovy and Ozempic for their care,” an NBC News source noted.

Ozempic and Wegovy are injections containing semaglutide, approved for weight loss and managing type 2 diabetes.

This drug mimics glucagon-like peptide 1, a hormone that helps reduce appetite and boost insulin production. By curbing hunger, semaglutide can promote weight loss.

A recent survey indicated that over 80% of Americans have heard of semaglutide, and about one in three expressed interest in trying it.

Novo Nordisk mentioned that Wegovy has surpassed 200,000 weekly prescriptions in the U.S.

However, another study showed that around 25% of Americans are considering taking semaglutide without a physician’s guidance, which is something doctors strongly caution against.

Initial research suggests potential uses for semaglutide in treating addiction and cardiovascular issues, though side effects like nausea, diarrhea, and constipation remain concerning.

Previously, Costco offered Ozempic through its pharmacy at much higher prices.

Looking back to April 2024, the cost for a three-month prescription of Ozempic was around $179, but didn’t account for the medication’s base price. For those without insurance, it reached as high as $1,600 per month.
