That’s quite a mistake.
Mayor Andrew Cuomo found himself in an awkward position after mixing up the names of New York City’s beloved bacon, egg, and cheese sandwiches during a recent interview.
He stumbled through his responses when asked about his favorite breakfast, even admitting his preference for English muffins over the classic bagel.
“I try to swap out the bacon, cheese, and eggs for an English muffin, although I’m not really taking the bacon off,” Cuomo said. He joked about how he was just trying to avoid bagels to maintain a certain look.
For many New Yorkers, the traditional order is bacon first, then eggs, followed by cheese. Cuomo’s unique take drew some laughs, as he replaced a staple breakfast sandwich with his own twist.
Juan Concepcion, a 34-year-old from Manhattan, expressed confusion over Cuomo’s choice. “He called it a muffin, but it sounded like an egg and cheese muffin instead,” he observed, adding that at least Cuomo is trying to be healthier.
Staff at Jimbo’s Burger Place found humor in Cuomo’s unconventional order. “It was pretty interesting,” remarked Kemo, a 50-year-old employee, from the eatery along First Avenue.
Cuomo’s comments garnered mixed reactions online too.
Councilmember Joanne Ariola (R-Queens) was particularly critical, questioning Cuomo’s ties to New York. “Honestly, calling it ‘bacon, cheese, eggs’ instead of bacon, egg, and cheese should disqualify him,” she commented.
Another user expressed disbelief at his mislabeling on social media.
Meanwhile, Zoran Mamdani, Cuomo’s competitor in the Democratic primary, commented at a press conference on the same day, suggesting that Cuomo doesn’t grasp the city’s essence. “He spends most of his time in his car or his expensive apartment, not interacting with the city,” Mamdani remarked.
In his campaign to replace Mayor Eric Adams, Cuomo’s breakfast orders haven’t been the only talking point. Adams has faced his own food-related scrutiny, revealing he no longer eats bagels due to diabetes, instead opting for healthier alternatives.
Adams, who describes himself as vegan, often shares his breakfast smoothie concoctions, which have drawn mixed responses online.
Cuomo’s recent interview didn’t help dispel some of the criticisms he faces; he acknowledged that he hadn’t lived in the city until fairly recently.
He officially moved into his East 54th Avenue apartment in December 2023, starting to live there full-time only the following fall.
Cuomo’s campaign did not respond to requests for clarification on his breakfast choices.
