‘Could be the absolute best at it’

Drew Brees wants another chance to call NFL games.

The future Hall of Fame quarterback and former NBC commentator said during his appearance on the show that he would like to get back in the booth. Front Office Sports Today Podcasts this week.

“I feel like if the opportunity presented itself, I could be the absolute best,” Brees said. “I treasured my time at NBC. The year I retired, I spent a lot of time in the studio on Sunday Night Football and got to work with some great people.”

Brees, who retired from the NFL following the 2020-21 season, spent the 2021-22 season with NBC and served as a studio analyst for the network. Football Night in America He will be broadcasting live Notre Dame college football games.

Brees, a former Saints and Chargers player, called play-by-play for two NFL games for NBC that season, including the 2022 AFC Wild Card game between the Bengals and Raiders, but Brees was panned at the time.

NBC and Brees split after the season following a brief, one-year marriage.

“…But I haven't had many opportunities to broadcast NFL games. That's what I feel I'm best qualified to do. That's what I'm most passionate about. And that's definitely where my knowledge base is — telling the story of the game, getting the crowd in the huddle, getting inside the quarterback's mind, letting them know how we're attacking this defense. For me, that's something I'd love to do in the future when the time is right.”

In the same interview, Brees praised fellow legendary quarterback Tom Brady, who will make his NFL debut on Fox during Sunday's Cowboys-Browns game, for the way he entered the booth.

“I think he did it the right way,” Brees said. “He's been out of games for a year. I think he's had some time to relax, to think a little bit and prepare a little bit. At the end of the day, Tom Brady has a knowledge base that very few people have, and I think that insight is going to give him a lot of valuable information in every single one of those broadcasts.”
