Councilwoman in Aurora starts recall effort against progressive district attorney

The ongoing debate about crime policy in Aurora, Colorado, has sparked efforts to recall the recently elected district attorney. This has arisen amid claims against Arapahoe County District Attorney Amy Padden regarding allegations about a registered sex offender, specifically involving Solomon Garrigan, who has faced serious charges.

City Councillor Daniel Julinski stated, “There have been various concerns in recent months. Padden dismissed cases that warranted prosecution and has issued probation for offenses that should have led to prison time.”

Garrigan, 33, is accused of attempting to lure an 11-year-old away from an elementary school playground. It’s reported that his registration as a sex offender is linked to actions in Pueblo County. Though it was determined he cannot stand trial due to mental health issues, Julinski remains frustrated by Padden’s handling of the case.

He expressed, “It feels like she sought out someone to declare Garrigan unfit for trial. This person has a history that should not have gone unnoticed.” Julinski also criticized Padden’s decision to dismiss charges against Garrigan rather than pursuing a commitment to a mental health facility.

Eric Ross, speaking for Padden’s office, clarified that state laws necessitate the dismissal of charges against mentally incompetent defendants, but emphasized that Garrigan would still be committed to a mental health institution.

Julinski noted that Garrigan’s release is part of a troubling pattern in Padden’s approach to crime since she took office. He referenced an incident involving Caitlyn Weaver, a 24-year-old killed in a vehicle collision with a teenager who had stolen a van. Julinski lamented that the charges against the teen did not adequately reflect the severity of the crime.

Padden has responded to the recall initiative that will officially be launched soon, announcing that her team has been set up to gather the necessary signatures. “We’re in the process of collecting funds and signatures,” she stated, confirming her commitment as the first to sign the petition.

Julinski believes gathering the required signatures will be manageable and plans to hold events and canvass door-to-door to mobilize support. “As a member of the Aurora City Council, I have a duty to protect the community and prioritize public safety,” he remarked.

In light of this, Ross mentioned attempts to contact Julinski regarding other case examples but claimed he hadn’t received a response. Additionally, concerns arose over a gang connected with local crime trends.

The Aurora city spokesperson has denied any connection to the recall efforts from the city or local politicians, and Padden has not yet commented on the situation.
