Ann Wilson Embraces the Cost of Faith in New Book
Ann Wilson, the Grammy-nominated Christian artist, has recently shared her thoughts on the challenges of following Jesus in her new book, “Rebel: Follow Jesus When the World Goes the Other Way.” In it, she talks about facing criticism, dealing with industry pressures, and the fear of rejection—all while staying true to her faith.
The singer from Kentucky believes her outspoken faith has in some ways limited her opportunities in Nashville. “I’ve missed a lot of opportunities to talk about my faith,” she shared, acknowledging a cost to her boldness. “When I stand for something, I’m going to stand for it no matter the cost.”
Reflecting on her journey, Wilson recalled how her management team had cautioned her about the potential consequences of her statements regarding faith. But her response was simple: “I just want to do it.”
This unwavering confidence appears throughout her writing. She emphasizes that when dealing with major labels, she made it clear from the start: if they tried to alter her message, there would be no deal. “There have definitely been moments where I’ve been looked at a certain way,” she remarked, noting the puzzled reactions as she preached the gospel at country festivals. “But I know my mission is to bring Jesus into the world.”
Sharing her faith has always been central to her music career. She often reflects on moments where she felt out of place in the country music scene yet remained inspired by a desire to stay authentic. “I remember feeling like, ‘Will people accept this? Can I be who I am?’” Despite her concerns, she says the reception has been more positive than she expected, merging the Christian and country music landscapes.
In her book, Wilson discusses an experience at the 2024 Tortuga Music Festival, where she felt a wave of disappointment upon seeing an empty tent just before her performance. “I sold out tours in Christendom—but now I can’t fill the little tent,” she pondered. These moments made her question her career choices and what it meant to be a country artist in a different atmosphere.
Despite feeling out of place, particularly among festival goers who appeared to be more focused on partying, Wilson received encouragement from fellow artist Laney Wilson, who told her to simply be herself. Once on stage, she shared her message, confident in her mission.
Throughout her journey, there have been temptations to soften her message or make it more acceptable. “I was tempted to change my setlist,” she admitted, recognizing the allure of gaining followers through less direct means. However, her motivation remains clear: “I want to share my Jesus and bring Him glory.”
Wilson acknowledges that many artists today may hesitate to express their faith openly, fearing backlash or judgment from fans. “There’s a fear of not being able to talk about your faith,” she explained, emphasizing the need for courage in sharing beliefs.
Ultimately, Ann Wilson remains steadfast about her identity and message, determined to navigate the music industry on her terms. “I’ve never let anyone dump me. I’m going to stay true to myself,” she concluded.
