Raul Malo Faces Cancer Challenge
Country musician Raul Malo recently shared a difficult update about his battle with stage IV colon cancer, revealing that he’s faced a setback due to a rare complication.
The 60-year-old frontman of The Mavericks, who first disclosed his diagnosis in June 2024, posted on social media that he has developed leptomeningeal disease (LMD). According to the Cleveland Clinic, LMD happens when cancer cells spread to the cerebrospinal fluid and membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, making it an incurable condition.
In his Instagram post, Malo announced the cancellation of the remaining 2025 tour dates, apart from a scheduled show on December 2, to prioritize his health.
“It’s taken a turn, so I want to keep you updated on my health,” Malo stated in a video where he played guitar while sitting in a chair.
Continuing the Fight
Malo explained the unpredictable nature of cancer and mentioned the treatment plans going forward. “I’ve developed something called LMD, which is pretty serious,” he noted. “The treatment includes radiation that will start tomorrow.” He also mentioned the possibility of chemotherapy and alternative therapies, emphasizing the importance of focusing on rest and recovery.
While confirming that all upcoming shows will be canceled, Malo expressed optimism about continuing creative projects, mentioning live recordings and merchandise. He appreciates fan support and reassured them that he would be sharing updates regularly.
The Mavericks had been touring with Dwight Yoakam on the Cosmic Roundup & Rodeo Tour until the recent health challenges forced the cancellation or postponement of several dates. Malo expressed gratitude for the understanding from his band and crew during this tough time.
He encouraged fans to hold on to their tickets for the two shows planned at the Lyman Auditorium in Nashville on December 5 and 6.
Malo made it clear he does not feel alone, stating, “I have a wonderful wife, kids, family, and a great support network.” He conveyed heartfelt appreciation for all the love and support he has received, noting, “Your texts and well wishes are truly noticed.”
As he contemplates the months ahead, Malo expressed uncertainty about what the future holds but remains committed to fighting. “We’re in it full steam ahead,” he remarked. “Fight, recover, rest, repeat.”
He closed with thanks to his fans for their incredible support, addressing the cancellations as a necessity for his health and urging kindness and understanding in the world around us.
