Incident at McDonald’s Highlights Intervention Against Abuse

A US country music artist recently shared a troubling incident that took place at a McDonald’s in Melbourne, where a female staff member was reportedly assaulted and spat on.

Drew Baldrige, who was in Australia performing with Jelly Roll, commended two men for intervening by restraining the alleged attacker. In the video, one man was heard stating, “If you want to abuse women, you’re in the wrong country.”

Baldrige expressed his admiration for the men’s actions, describing it as moving to see them stand up for the woman involved. He shared the footage on social media, emphasizing a clear message: “Never abuse a woman.”

He noted that the man was verbally harassing staff multiple times, which caught his attention. “I was getting annoyed and finally told him, ‘Brother, you need to calm down. You shouldn’t talk to women like that.’”

At one point, the man reportedly spat on a young woman. Baldrige recounted, “He said something like, ‘Just because his command wasn’t right doesn’t mean I don’t know what it was.’”

Other patrons in the restaurant confronted the aggressor, insisting, “Hey, we don’t talk like that with women.” Soon after, Baldrige saw the two men tackle the offender to the ground, making it clear that such behavior was unacceptable.

While Baldrige acknowledged that some might disagree with their confrontational approach, he felt such situations call for action. “It was powerful to witness these men defending her,” he remarked.

He added that some people might think it’s wrong to resort to fighting, but, he mused, “Sometimes you need to know when to fight.” He believes this kind of assertiveness is needed more in society, even if it’s a tough conversation to have.

It’s not precisely clear when this incident occurred, but Baldrige had performances at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena on October 28 and 29. Reports from the Victorian Bureau of Crime Statistics indicated a troubling rise in crime rates in the area, sparking discussions about safety.

The video Baldrige posted garnered significant online attention, amassing over 100,000 views across various platforms. Many viewers praised the two men’s intervention, with comments flooding in on social media about what it means to be a “real man.”

A domestic violence survivor expressed gratitude towards Baldrige for shining a light on this critical issue, emphasizing the importance of recognizing that any form of disrespect or violence towards women is unacceptable.

In closing the video, Baldrige quoted lyrics from his new song “Rebel,” reflecting how the incident resonated with its themes: “If the whole world wants to dance with the devil, you can call me a rebel.” He concluded, “And those guys were real rebels.”
