Walker Hayes Discusses Struggles and Sobriety

Country singer Walker Hayes has been candid about the tough times in his life, especially his battle with alcohol.

During his recent talk on the “K-Love Morning Show,” the 45-year-old artist shared the tragedy of losing his daughter, Oakley, who was born on the same day in June 2018.

At that time, he had managed to stay sober for two and a half years. However, after attending the funeral, he found himself in a dark place, contemplating a destructive path.

“I drove to a bar named 55 South,” he recalled. “When I looked inside and saw three guys sitting there… well, that’s certainly something.” His mind was racing as he considered going in.

Just before stepping out of the car, he realized he had forgotten his wallet and, perhaps as a sign, decided to drive back home instead.

Upon his arrival, Hayes noticed his wife, Rainey, sitting alone in their house, and it struck him deeply. “That was a pivotal moment for me,” he said, reflecting on the pain she was enduring.

He mentioned, “My wife had just buried our daughter, and I could see the impact of my choices.” The next day, she picked him up from jail after a mistake he made, launching a new chapter in their lives focused on healing.

The couple also parents six other children: sons Beckett, Baylor, and Chapel, along with daughters Everly, Roxley, and Lera.

Previously, Hayes has spoken about his struggles with alcohol, weaving these personal experiences into his music. His 2024 album, titled “Sober Thoughts,” marks this journey.

While promoting the album, he appeared on “Today with Hoda and Jenna,” recalling the moment he realized it was time to change after battling addiction for two decades. “I woke up one Saturday and felt that if I continued this way, my health would be in grave danger,” he explained. It was a simple yet pivotal realization.

He expressed gratitude for being able to share his story through music, finding solace in writing about his journey to sobriety. “Everyone loves drinking songs, but now I find joy in writing about my freedom from addiction,” he shared, clearly appreciating his new perspective.

He described the clarity that comes with sobriety, reflecting on how life feels different—lighter, almost rejuvenating. “It’s as if I feel 17 again when I step into that mindset,” he added, highlighting the stark contrast between his past and present.
