Recent Domestic Terrorist Attacks Raise Concerns
Last week, our nation faced two alarming domestic terrorist incidents—one in Texas and another in New York. Federal authorities have heightened alerts, suggesting that more attacks could be imminent. It’s unsettling to think about when the next incident might happen.
Following an attempted bombing near the residence of the New York City mayor last Saturday, Police Chief Jessica Tisch stated that it was a confirmed terrorist act.
Both suspects, identified as Amir Barat and Ibrahim Qayumi, reportedly admitted to their ties with ISIS during their actions that day. Mayor Zoran Mamdani mentioned that they traveled from Pennsylvania with plans to target anti-Muslim protests.
“There’s video evidence of them throwing two devices at the protest,” Mamdani remarked. “The police determined these were improvised explosive devices intended to cause harm.”
Having apprehended the suspects at the scene, Chief Tisch confirmed that the devices indeed were IEDs (improvised explosive devices) capable of inflicting serious injuries or fatalities. One of these devices contained triacetone triperoxide, commonly known as TATP, a volatile homemade explosive utilized in various attacks worldwide. “Our bomb squad managed to neutralize both devices,” Tisch noted.
In reaction to the attack, the New York Police Department ramped up security measures statewide, deploying additional officers to various locations. The National Guard also contributed, bolstering security following concerns about potential threats. The attack seems to correlate with President Trump’s directive from November regarding military involvement in West Africa, aimed at safeguarding Christians from Islamic extremists.
