County in New York passes law declaring it illegal for animal abusers to have pets.

Lawmakers in Suffolk County, New York, have recently enhanced the Animal Cruelty Act by prohibiting convicted animal abusers from owning pets. The county council voted to implement a Class A misdemeanor charge for those found in violation, which could lead to up to one year in jail or fines reaching $1,000.

This legislation builds on a framework established back in 2010 with the introduction of the Animal Abuse Registration, marking it as a pioneering law in the U.S.

County Executive Ed Romain endorsed the revised law, emphasizing his commitment to animal welfare, stating he would “protect animals.” He warned potential offenders, “Don’t abuse animals. We’ll chase after you. We’ll prosecute you and protect the animals.”

The Suffolk County Police Department and the District Attorney’s Office maintain a registry that currently includes 30 individuals convicted of animal abuse, and these offenders will remain in the registry for ten years unless they face further animal cruelty charges.

Previously, those convicted of animal cruelty were already barred from owning pets, but there were no real penalties for defying this rule.

Suffolk legislator Stephanie Bontempe commented on closing this loophole, reinforcing the community’s intolerance towards animal abuse and neglect. “By closing this loophole, we ensure that offenders who ignore the law face consequences,” she stated, adding that it shouldn’t have been an issue in the first place.

This legal update comes shortly after the shocking discovery of numerous deceased cats in a Long Island home, which highlighted the dire need for stronger regulations and enforcement.

Roy Gross, the head of the Suffolk County Animal Cruelty Prevention Association, expressed his enthusiasm for the changes, noting that this empowers authorities to take action against repeat offenders effectively. “Our hands were tied up before,” he remarked.
