Reality TV Stars Arrested for Alleged Grocery Theft

Melanie Viljoen, a cast member from The Real Housewives of Pretoria, along with her husband, Petrus Viljoen, has been arrested for allegedly stealing a significant amount of groceries from a Florida store.

The couple, ages 39 and 57 respectively, was apprehended by Boca Raton police on a Wednesday. They face charges of aggravated grand retail theft exceeding $3,000, as indicated in arrest records. The pair are currently held on a bond of $10,000.

Notably, when the reality series debuted in 2022, the original cast members had a run-in with the law during a traffic stop while driving a Range Rover.

Boca Raton authorities initiated a retail theft investigation on August 29, which lasted six months, after identifying surveillance footage that showed a man and woman entering a Publix store and engaging in a ticket exchange. This behavior, as explained by the police, is a method where a cheaper item’s price tag is affixed to a more expensive one to deceive the cashier.

Additionally, Melanie and Petrus were reportedly seen on camera bypassing the self-checkout and leaving the store with a cart filled with high-priced items.

The investigation alleges that they stole a total of 392 items across 52 transactions from August 2025 to March 2026. These items reportedly included cases of expensive sparkling water, mineral water, and Prosecco, along with groceries like toilet paper and produce.

In her statement to the police, Melanie confessed that she and her husband were the individuals captured on the surveillance footage. But she suggested that she was solely responsible, claiming Petrus had no involvement.

Despite admitting to taking $5,300 worth of groceries, Melanie shared with authorities that her actions stemmed from feeling like she was in “survival mode,” stating that she hasn’t worked since arriving in the U.S. due to visa issues.

The investigation into their case continues.
