Couple Takes Dog for a Walk. Woman Passes Away, Police Look for Husband.

Tragic Incident at Massachusetts Beach

A woman lost her life and her husband went missing after they fell through ice while walking their dog at First Encounter Beach in Massachusetts on February 14, according to authorities.

Eastham’s police and fire departments were alerted at 9 a.m. that day. Upon arrival, officers located the woman approximately 30 feet from the shore. In an attempt to rescue her, two officers also fell into the icy water but managed to return safely to solid ground.

Fire department personnel suited up in winter gear and entered the water but could not immediately find her. Eventually, the Barnstable County Dive Team joined the search and discovered the woman at 11 a.m., unfortunately pronouncing her dead at the scene.

An investigation indicated that the woman was with her husband, who likely fell through the ice before emergency responders arrived. An extensive search over several hours failed to locate him, prompting authorities to pause the search for the day. They resumed operations at 7 a.m. on February 15.

Despite a two-hour search effort using a drone and foot patrols along the coastline, the man remained missing. Authorities mentioned that further search operations would be considered if ice conditions changed. They withheld the victim’s identity at the family’s request.

The couple’s dog was found on the beach and has since been reunited with family members.

Local resident David Norris expressed concern about the area, stating it was “dangerous.” He mentioned that he avoids taking his own dogs to that spot until summer, highlighting the potential risks associated with the ice conditions.

When officers arrived, they could hear the woman pleading for help. Those officers who fell through the ice while trying to assist her were taken to a local hospital for evaluations.

The Eastham Police Department has yet to provide further comments regarding the incident.
