Moose Calf Rescued from Bear by Maine Couple

A couple from Maine recently rescued a moose calf from a bear during a routine fishing trip. Todd and Elvia Malcolm spotted a female moose near a forest in Telos Township and decided to stop for a photo. Todd, believing the bear would take the calf if he didn’t act, jumped into action.

“I knew what I had to do, so I just did it,” Todd shared. After parking their truck, they noticed the moose appeared agitated for a reason. Moments later, both a bear and the calf emerged from the woods, making a frantic rush toward them.

Feeling the urgency of the situation, Todd “put the truck into drive and just stepped on the gas.” His intention wasn’t to harm the bear; he just wanted to position the truck between the predator and the vulnerable calf. Luckily, his plan worked. The bear retreated into the woods.

“Boom, it’s gone,” Todd said, relieved that the danger had passed.

Elvia experienced her own wave of anxiety during the incident. “My heart was racing because I didn’t want to witness the bear taking the calf,” she recounted. But once the calf passed the truck and out of danger, she spotted the mother moose and the calf together again.

Despite the chaos, Elvia managed to take a few photos of the scene, albeit from inside the truck. “When I started looking, I really thought maybe there was a bug on the windshield,” she mentioned.

After the dramatic rescue, the couple resumed their fishing trip, satisfied that they had helped reunite the mother and calf.
