Courtney Stodden Reflects on Her Marriage and Child Marriage in America
Courtney Stodden has opened up about her marriage at just 16, where she claims she became the “main breadwinner.” She described child marriage as “America’s dirty little secret.” Speaking on the Lifetime show “Torn From the Headlines,” she detailed how her role quickly shifted, making her financially responsible for someone significantly older than her father.
Stodden shared, “It was overwhelming to process everything. At 16, I thought I had it all figured out—what kid doesn’t, right? But then things escalated rapidly, and suddenly, I was the one supporting the relationship.”
“There’s this misconception that I married for money as a child, but that’s just ridiculous,” she pointed out. “I was a kid, and there were so many things I couldn’t express. Keeping all that bottled up led to destructive habits. Now, at 31, I’m beginning to grasp what really happened. And honestly, it’s hard to face.”
“There’s clearly a problem in America. We think of child marriage as something that happens elsewhere. But in my view, our dirty little secret is a justice system loophole that lets pedophiles marry children.”

Stodden, who drew attention for marrying Doug Hutchison when he was 51, emphasized, “The scariest part? I’m not alone in this. So many people reach out to me, sharing their horror stories as child brides.”
After a tumultuous relationship filled with separations and reconciliations, Stodden eventually filed for divorce in 2018, with a final agreement reached in 2020. She faced intense scrutiny due to their 35-year age difference, which left her feeling deeply judged.
Reflecting on her past, Stodden noted, “I painted a picture of my younger self as a defense mechanism. At the time, my fashion choices felt like a rebellion. Criticism often landed on me as a child, not on my abuser, which I had to confront in my own way.”
“They weren’t criticizing me; they were attacking a character I created. In some sense, that character helped protect me,” she added.
In a recent episode titled “I Was a Child Bride: The Courtney Stodden Story,” which she produced and narrated, she revisited her marriage experience. While the show helped her share her story, it also reopened wounds related to her relationship with her father. “Marrying so young, my parents thought Doug was a good man. Not having my dad’s support made it even harder,” she admitted.
Stodden has now moved forward with her life, having married television producer Jared Safier in December 2024. Describing their relationship, she said, “He has shown me a different kind of love. It feels like a fresh start.”
“Trust isn’t easy for me, especially with men, but he has really earned my trust. I finally feel safe, and he has demonstrated what healthy love can be.”
