Preamble

Hello! It’s that exciting time of year: Championship playoffs. Tonight marks the first leg of the second semi-final, with Coventry facing Sunderland at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

The teams finished fifth and fourth in the standings. Although Sunderland had a seven-point edge over Coventry, it’s actually Frank Lampard’s squad that seems to have the upper hand lately. Régis Le Bris is hoping to bring his team back to the Premier League for the first time since 2017, but they haven’t seen a win since early April.

So much at stake. Stay with us for team news and buildup before the 8pm BST kick-off. And, feel free to share your thoughts, questions, or even your playoff traditions—I’d love to hear from you!

Pre-Match Statistics

  • Sunderland hasn’t won any of their last 13 away matches against Coventry in all competitions (D5 L8), with their last victory being 1-0 at Highfield Road in April 1985.
  • Coventry has triumphed in seven of their last eight home league matches (L1), including a 3-0 win against Sunderland. Since Frank Lampard came aboard in late November, only Leeds United and Bristol City have gained more points at home in the Championship than Coventry.
  • The Sky Blues last appeared in League Two during the 2017-18 season and were involved in two EFL playoff instances, finishing undefeated in six games (W3 D3) but failing to secure promotion to the Premier League in the 2022-23 Championship Playoff Final against Luton Town.
  • This is Sunderland’s ninth time ending the season in the EFL playoffs, having struggled in four of their last five league campaigns. Out of the previous eight semi-final appearances, the Black Cats only managed to win one of eight legs (D2 L5).

Current Status of Other Semi-Finals

Sheffield United made waves last night, clinching a spot at Wembley with a convincing 3-0 win at Bristol City.

Ben Fisher covered the match at Ashton Gate.

It’s interesting to note that United came into this matchup with a dismal playoff record, having failed to secure a win in their last nine playoff campaigns. Wilder even joked about how many players were likely not even born during his early experiences with playoffs.

Despite some early anxiety about an offside goal, United managed to find their rhythm before going into halftime with the lead.
