COVID-19 origins may stem from 'zoonotic spillover,' but the lab leak theory remains a possibility, according to a WHO report.

WHO Report on Covid-19 Origins

On Friday, the World Health Organization (WHO) scientific advisory group released findings regarding the origins of Covid-19. The report suggests that the virus may have jumped to humans through “Zoonotic Spilover” from bats or potentially through intermediaries.

A panel known as the Scientific Advisory Group on the Origin of New Pathogens (SAGO)—comprised of 27 independent experts—stated that, while it could not provide complete insights into all hypotheses, the Director, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, noted that “all hypotheses must remain on the table,” including both zoonotic diseases and lab leaks.

The Wall Street Journal highlighted that preliminary findings from the WHO’s investigations indicate ongoing suspicious activities surrounding the origins of Covid-19.

The WHO had previously urged China to share genetic sequences from Covid-19 cases early in the pandemic. However, it appears that this information has yet to be shared with either SAGO or other relevant bodies.

Ghebreyesus expressed gratitude to the 27 members of SAGO for their commitment over the past three years. He emphasized the importance of transparency from China and other nations holding pertinent information to protect against future pandemics.

As detailed in their findings, SAGO has met numerous times to assess various sources, including peer-reviewed research and interviews, to update their conclusions. The WHO underscored that understanding the origins of SARS-CoV-2 is not only a scientific pursuit but also a moral obligation, essential for preventing future pandemics and alleviating global suffering.

In a statement, the group chair, Mariedg Venter, made it clear that the search for answers regarding SARS-CoV-2 remains an ongoing effort. The WHO welcomed any new evidence that could shed light on the origins of the virus and reiterated its commitment to continuous review of incoming information.
