Cowboys Decide on George Pickens’ Contract

The Cowboys hold George Pickens in high regard, but not enough to commit to a long-term deal this year.

Stephen Jones, the Executive Vice President, informed the press on Wednesday that the team has decided to pause contract discussions with the wide receiver. Instead, they will utilize the franchise tag, which has a value of $27.3 million and was assigned to him back in March.

“We opted to have George play under the franchise tag, which isn’t new for us,” Jones explained. “There won’t be negotiations for a long-term contract going forward. This choice isn’t unique to our organization; it’s not uncommon in the league either. We’ve experienced this with players like Dak Prescott and DeMarcus Lawrence.”

Jones clarified that they had informed Pickens’ agent, David Mulugeta, last week about the end of negotiations, describing the conversation as “very amicable.”

Both Jerry Jones and head coach Brian Schottenheimer had a direct conversation with Pickens, who is 25 years old, to share their decision.

With the franchise tag in place, there was a July 15 cut-off for Pickens’ representatives and the Cowboys to agree to a long-term contract.

Although the Cowboys are looking forward to having Pickens back for this upcoming season, it’s uncertain whether he will attend the offseason program starting next week.

Pickens has yet to sign an offer sheet. He was acquired by the Cowboys along with a 2027 sixth-round pick in a trade with the Steelers, where Dallas had sent a 2026 third-round pick prior to the 2025 season.

Last season, Pickens set new personal bests with 93 catches, totaling 1,429 yards and nine touchdown receptions.

Jones expressed enthusiasm about Pickens’ role in the team, stating, “We’re thrilled to have George on board. He’s made considerable progress during his time with us, and it’s a great setup for him, playing alongside CeeDee.” He also mentioned the support from players like Dak and the coaching staff, but noted that this was ultimately a deliberate decision on their part.
