Brian Flores’ Future in Question
Brian Flores might soon be changing teams. Reports indicate that the current defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, whose contract is nearing its end, is attracting interest from several clubs. Notably, if the Cowboys decide to part ways with Matt Eberflus, they may make a strong push to hire Flores.
The Vikings are interested in extending Flores’ contract. However, should he receive an offer for a head coach position elsewhere, he could leave without any restrictions.
Should the Cowboys part ways with Eberflus—which seems likely after a challenging season—there’s speculation about how the franchise will navigate his potential replacement. Eberflus’ departure could be linked to significant team changes, including the mid-season trade of star player Micah Parsons to Green Bay.
Interestingly, former Jets coach Rex Ryan noted last year that Jerry Jones, the Cowboys’ owner, may have preferred Flores over Mike Zimmer if he had been willing to financially support the move. Whether Jones will agree to meet Flores’ salary demands remains a point of uncertainty.
If Flores does not extend his stay with the Vikings and enters free agency—potentially regarded as the leading defensive coordinator candidate—he would likely find himself in high demand, possibly leading to a lucrative contract.
Flores has spent three seasons as the Vikings’ defensive coordinator. While Minnesota has attempted to negotiate an extension, Flores has opted not to, a decision that might be advantageous for him in the long run.
Following the Vikings’ impressive shutout of the Detroit Lions, NBC analyst Chris Sims remarked how Flores is receiving significant recognition, even suggesting that he should be head coach material given his impact.
With a background that includes a three-year tenure as head coach of the Miami Dolphins, where he held a record of 24 wins to 25 losses but managed to finish his last two seasons above .500, Flores has proven his capabilities.
Additionally, Flores made headlines in 2022 when he filed a class-action lawsuit against the NFL and several teams for alleged racial discrimination, claiming that the Giants had already decided on their head coach without adequately considering him.
