Reason Behind George Pickens’ Bench in Opening Series
The Dallas Cowboys’ executive vice president, Stephen Jones, provided insight into why star wide receiver George Pickens was benched during the team’s first series against the Las Vegas Raiders. CeeDee Lamb, who also sat out the opening series, shared that both he and Pickens missed the team’s 10 p.m. curfew after enjoying dinner and drinks the night before. However, Jones mentioned that there was another reason for Pickens’ benching.
“I’m not going to play any championship favorites,” Jones said, referring to head coach Brian Schottenheimer. He added that there were different details that played a role in the situation. “I think a lot of people thought they had to be together because they’re great friends, but believe it or not, one was the night before heading out in the morning, and the other missed the bus,” he explained.
Despite starting on the sidelines, both Lamb and Pickens delivered impressive performances in the Cowboys’ 33-16 win. Pickens recorded nine catches for 144 yards and a touchdown, while Lamb contributed five catches for 66 yards and a touchdown.
The duo is recognized as one of the top wide receiver pairings in the NFL. Lamb has faced some challenges this season due to injury, missing three games. During his absence, Pickens emerged as a dependable target for Dak Prescott, accumulating 58 catches for 908 yards and seven touchdowns after joining the Cowboys from the Pittsburgh Steelers. This season, Lamb has tallied 40 receptions for 557 yards and two touchdowns over seven games.
Looking ahead, the Cowboys, currently at 4-5-1, are set to face off against the Philadelphia Eagles, who hold an 8-2 record, on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET.
