Fans of the Cowboys expressed their disappointment that Micah Parsons hasn’t yet secured an extension, especially during Jerry Jones’ speech at training camp last Saturday.
A video shared by Athletic captured Jones mixing up “Micah” with other names as Dallas management pledged improvements after their lackluster 7-10 record in 2024.
“I was taken aback by last year’s record,” Jones remarked. “It was unexpected. I want you to see what we’ve done to address our weaknesses, particularly on the offensive line.”
“There have been numerous changes. Coaching shifts, new players—quite a lot has happened.”
However, for the moment, fans seemed more concerned about Parsons, a standout defensive player, potentially playing under his fifth-year option and exploring free agency next season.
Back in June, Parsons had highlighted that delays in finalizing his deal would increase costs for the Cowboys. Recently, he mentioned to reporters a desire for Dallas to share the same commitment to expanding their defensive stars as other teams do.
“If they don’t want me here, that’s their choice,” Parsons said. “I’m aware of the business aspect. As long as I’m under contract, I’ll give my best effort. But if it ends here, well, then that’s how it goes.”
Parsons, who has been limited in practice due to back issues, quickly emerged as a key player after recording 52.5 sacks in his first four seasons and being selected 12th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.
He noted, somewhat surprisingly, “I don’t take it personally. I just don’t get it.”
Cowboys fans have rallied around their star player, noting the complexities of the situation. Interestingly, Jones had commented last week, “Signing him doesn’t automatically mean he’s ours.”
“The contract spans four or five years. If you perform well in the first few, there’s a lot that can happen after that,” Jones elaborated. “You get hit hard in this league; there’s much to consider for the future. Ever seen a team that’s really committed to their players?”
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Parsons, reports confirmed that the Cowboys recently signed tight end Jake Ferguson to a four-year, $52 million extension, indicating that they are willing to commit to players long-term.
