Controversy Strikes NFL Week Again
It’s almost tradition at this point—another week of NFL means another moment of controversy. Just ask the football fans who were fuming after the offensive pass interference call against the Cowboys during their 44-30 defeat on Thursday Night Football in Detroit.
In a critical moment, Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson was penalized for offensive pass interference while navigating around Lions linebacker Alex Anzalone. However, many replays suggest that the call may have gone the wrong way, as Anzalone seemed to grab Ferguson instead.
A video shared on social media captured the moment, with fans expressing disbelief over the officiating. One tweet exclaimed, “🚨🚨Insane phone call🚨🚨 The referees called this offensive pass interference on Ferguson, even though Anzalone was the one who obstructed him. Detroit should have been penalized instead.”
The ambiguity of the situation was intensified with less than four minutes remaining and the Cowboys trailing 37-27. If the Lions had been penalized, Dallas could have had a perfect opportunity to score a crucial touchdown.
This decision left Prime Video rules analyst Terry McCauley scratching his head. He commented during the broadcast, “Kirk, I just see him swimming. I don’t see any offensive pass interference. He swam through there, which is completely legal, but then he got grabbed.”
The missed call forced the Cowboys to settle for a 29-yard field goal, which made the score a more manageable seven points. However, frustration with officiating flared, especially from former WFAN host Mike Francesa, who took to social media to express his discontent. He noted, “Every week we see very bad call after very bad call in NFL games, and it never gets better. The NFL has to try harder. No wonder so many fans cry out that the league is rigged.”
Following that, the Lions extended their lead to 44-30 on their next drive, and any hopes of a comeback for the Cowboys were dashed when Dak Prescott was intercepted by DJ Reed with just over a minute left in the game.
As a result, the Cowboys’ three-game winning streak came to an end. They now sit with a record of 6 wins, 6 losses, and 1 tie. It’s a frustrating moment for Dallas fans, and one that adds to the ongoing discussion about NFL officiating and its impact on games.
