Cowboys make surprising trade to bring in Joey Porter Jr. from the Steelers

The Steelers and Cowboys are in the final stages of a deal that will see Joey Porter Jr. head to Dallas, as reported by NFL insider Tom Pelissero late Wednesday night.

This trade follows the Steelers’ inability to negotiate a contract extension for Porter, who is currently in the last year of his rookie contract. In return for the cornerback, Pittsburgh will receive a sixth-round pick in 2027 and a second-round pick in 2028.

It’s worth noting that Porter hasn’t played this season and was absent from training camp due to ongoing contract discussions.

The Cowboys first expressed interest in Porter a few weeks ago, and recent talks have intensified, per Pelissero.

In a conversation with 105.3 The Fan, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spoke about the team’s interest in bolstering their defense, though he didn’t specifically mention Porter. “I’ll just say we’re right on top of it. We’re very aware of the moving parts out here. Communication at all levels — mine, Stephen’s, and the scouts’ — is vital,” Jones commented. “This is a time when discussions can indeed be productive.”

Porter was selected by the Steelers with the 32nd overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and has accumulated 165 tackles, three interceptions, and 31 passes defended over his three seasons. Last season, he recorded 52 tackles, a sack, an interception, and defended 14 passes over 14 games.

Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy mentioned in late August that the two parties were at an “impasse” regarding contract negotiations, which prevented a deal from being reached before the season began.

This trade could help the Cowboys address a defensive need, as they have been allowing an average of 27.3 points per game, sitting at 25th in the league. Their season has been rocky thus far, with a record of 1-2.
