Throughout the season, many wondered if Mike McCarthy's time with the Cowboys (7-8) would end after the season. The team is riddled with injuries and is underperforming, and the head coach is in the final year of his contract.
That may turn out to be true, but probably not for the reasons most people expect.
McCarthy could part ways with Dallas for another head coaching job. According to USA Today.
The 61-year-old has hired Dong Yee as his agent, the paper said. Mr. Yee, Tom Brady's longtime agent, also represented the Chargers' Jim Harbaugh and the Broncos' Sean Payton in their recent NFL returns.
And while things were chaotic in Dallas this season, with the team going 1-3 in playoff games under McCarthy, he led the team to a third consecutive 12-5 record and two district titles.
He also has the appeal of a Super Bowl-winning coach, even if his ring with the Packers ended 14 years before his contract expired.
McCarthy, who has been publicly supported by the Cowboys' star players, is believed to be in demand, making it difficult for manager Jerry Jones to bring him back after not signing him to a contract extension before the season. There is a possibility that it will happen.
And Jones put an interesting twist on the story by going out of his way to praise McCarthy after the Cowboys' win over the Buccaneers on Sunday night, just hours after they were officially eliminated from playoff contention.
“I'm proud of those guys, boys,” Jones told reporters after the game. “They didn't give up on it there. So I'm really proud of them and Mike McCarthy won't let them think they can't make the Super Bowl.”
