Dallas Cowboys Release Trevon Diggs
The Dallas Cowboys have reportedly released their star cornerback, Trevon Diggs, on Tuesday. This is quite a significant move, given that just a few years ago, the 27-year-old Diggs was seen as a key player in the team’s defensive lineup.
In 2021, he led the NFL with 11 interceptions, earning first-team All-Pro honors. The following year, he managed to snag three more interceptions and was selected for the Pro Bowl for the second time. At the start of training camp in 2023, Diggs signed a five-year contract extension worth $97 million, which seemed to signify a long-term commitment from the Cowboys.
Yet, it’s worth mentioning that things took a downturn after signing the contract. After playing in 16 and 17 games during the 2021 and 2022 seasons, respectively, Diggs only participated in two games in 2023 due to a torn ACL he suffered during practice in September.
His struggles continued into 2024, where he managed to play in 11 games but couldn’t get back to his previous form, eventually landing on injured reserve for further surgery on his knee.
In 2025, he had more issues with that same knee as well as a concussion from a home accident, playing only eight games. During that period, he recorded a modest 25 total tackles and, notably, no interceptions. Over his career with the Cowboys, Diggs has accumulated 20 interceptions, 63 passes defensed, two forced fumbles, and 240 total tackles across 66 games.
With his release, Diggs will be placed on waivers. Any team that claims him will need to cover his base salary of $472,000, plus an additional $58,823 if he becomes active. Importantly, there’s no guaranteed money left in his contract beyond this season.
As the Cowboys sit with a 7-8-1 record and out of playoff contention, Diggs won’t be available for their upcoming Week 18 game against the New York Giants, who currently hold a 3-13 record.
