Dallas Cowboys Honor Late Teammate with Victory
In a heartfelt night of remembrance, the Dallas Cowboys dedicated their victory to their late teammate, Marshawn Kneeland.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer, among many teammates, closed his eyes during the national anthem in Las Vegas, wearing a T-shirt that honored Kneeland, who tragically took his own life earlier this month. Since their last game on November 3, the team has been reeling from the news that came shortly after a loss to the Arizona Cardinals on “Monday Night Football.”
Both teams observed a moment of silence for Kneeland before the game. The Cowboys went on to defeat the Las Vegas Raiders 33-16, marking a return to the win column.
The Cowboys’ defense, which has had its struggles this season, put on an impressive performance, disrupting the Raiders’ offense led by quarterback Geno Smith. The Cowboys’ defense made four sacks, with rookie Quinnen Williams contributing 1.5 in his debut after being acquired from the New York Jets. Defensive tackle Kenny Clark also made half a sack, alongside James Houston and Osa Odighizuwa, who each recorded a sack as well.
On offense, things were a bit rocky for Dak Prescott and the team, despite the veteran quarterback throwing for four touchdowns and 268 yards.
The game had a shaky start for Dallas, who opened with a three-and-out series during which key players CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens were on the sidelines. ESPN’s Lisa Salters mentioned that it was a decision made by the coach to keep Lamb out for that initial drive.
Things didn’t get better when Maxx Crosby strip-sacked Prescott on the following drive, but the Cowboys’ defense held the Raiders to just three points after the turnover in their red zone.
Once Lamb and Pickens entered the game, they quickly made an impact. Lamb scored first with an 18-yard touchdown catch from Prescott on the team’s third drive. Shortly after, after Prescott connected with tight end Jake Ferguson, Pickens dazzled with a 37-yard catch-and-run that avoided several defenders, giving the Cowboys a comfortable 24-6 lead late in the first half.
In his first game for the Cowboys, Pickens was impressive, leading all players with nine receptions for 144 yards and one touchdown. Lamb also had a solid performance with five receptions for 66 yards, while Javonte Williams rounded out the offense with 22 carries for 93 yards.
On the other side, Smith felt constant pressure, completing 27 of 42 passes for 238 yards and one touchdown to Tre Tucker in the fourth quarter. Tucker made four catches for 47 yards. Tight end Brock Bowers did his best for the Raiders, with 72 yards on seven receptions. However, their strategy leaned heavily on the pass, leaving rookie running back Ashton Giunty with just six carries for seven yards.
The game turned decisively for the Cowboys when they secured a safety against Giunty in the Raiders’ end zone, bringing the score to 31-16. From there, they maintained control.
Now sitting at 4-5-1, the Cowboys will keep forging ahead despite the heartbreak within their locker room. They are set to return home next week for an NFC East rivalry matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles at AT&T Stadium, where they hope to initiate a winning streak.
