Coyote’s Daring Swim to Alcatraz Island
A coyote made quite the splash on Alcatraz Island this past Sunday, leaving guests and staff in disbelief. How exactly did this adventurous creature manage such a feat?
One tourist recorded remarkable footage of the coyote navigating the rocky waters of the former prison island. In the video, the coyote stands on a rock, visibly shivering.
“I can barely stand,” a voice from the crowd can be heard stating. “Looks like he’s cold.”
This onlooker shared the video with an employee of Alcatraz City Cruises, who quickly alerted a park ranger. However, when officials arrived, the coyote had mysteriously vanished. According to employee Aidan Moore, “I think he may have been chasing something and fell into the water, and got swept away.”
The boat captain mentioned that the current had calmed down that afternoon, making it unlikely for any animals to swim effectively. “His condition didn’t seem very good, but I’m not surprised, considering what he just went through,” Moore remarked.
No one is quite sure where the coyote swam from, but San Francisco is around 2.0 miles away. The animal might have ventured in from nearby Maligne Island or Angel Island, where other coyote families reside, as per reports.
Moore stated, “We’ve been walking all over the island looking for him, but no one has been able to find him. Maybe he won’t be seen for a while.”
Comments on the video shared on Facebook reveal that other coyotes have indeed been spotted around the island. One commenter said, “Very brave coyote, but we’re all tired. I saw a coyote when I went to Alcatraz a week ago. I hope they get help.” Another person added, “Wow! I’ve seen this on Angel Island, and this is impressive.”
