Coyote Sightings on the Rise in Southern California
Coyotes are becoming more common across Southern California, with residents of Playa del Rey, Santa Monica, Del Rey, and Pasadena noticing them more often.
Recent reports and local authorities have validated an uptick in sightings, as these animals traverse streets, backyards, and parks. This is especially pronounced during the current breeding season.
Officials from Santa Monica have attributed the surge in sightings, particularly in the area north of Montana Avenue, to the Palisades Fire in January 2025. This event displaced the animals from their usual habitats, prompting them to venture into urban settings in search of food and shelter.
Guidance has been provided on how to co-exist with coyotes, emphasizing that while they are typically wary of humans, they are becoming bolder. They seem to be increasingly visible, even in residential neighborhoods.
In Del Rey, locals have reported seeing coyotes along Ballona Creek and in areas where they previously weren’t spotted.
Experts note that the current breeding season might be contributing to their increased mobility and vocalizations. There’s been quite a buzz on social media, with recent posts showing a coyote casually strolling down Lincoln Avenue in Pasadena at dusk, seemingly unfazed by both people and pets nearby.
Coyotes are quite adaptable canines native to North America. They’ve expanded into urban areas likely because cities offer food and shelter with fewer natural threats. Research indicates that urban coyotes often display bolder and more curious behaviors compared to their rural counterparts, mainly due to frequent, non-threatening interactions with people.
Despite this, attacks on humans are still very rare. These animals primarily prey on small wildlife and are often attracted to neighborhoods by unsecured trash, fallen fruits, and pet food.
Wildlife officials recommend taking precautions such as securing attractants and monitoring small pets. Using loud noises can help reinforce coyotes’ natural aversion to humans. While those who understand coyote behavior can minimize potential conflicts, the increasing sightings illustrate how these clever and adaptable animals are thriving in the urban sprawl of Southern California.
