Crackdown on Queens' 'most violent gang' leads to arrest of 32 young suspects

Major Queens Gang Bust Unveils Alarming Violence

In a significant law enforcement action, authorities have charged thirty-two individuals in what is being described as the largest gang bust in Queens history.

The suspects, aged 15 to 24, are reportedly part of the Bad-Co Ballout gang, which has allegedly wreaked havoc in Queens Village, engaging in acts of violence that they sometimes flaunt on social media.

At a press conference where the indictment was announced, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz expressed concern, noting that the group is suspected of being linked to at least 13 homicides stemming from a year-long investigation. “The level of violence connected to this gang is truly alarming,” she said.

This gang, labeled as the most violent in the area, reportedly operates with a chilling disregard for safety. Katz emphasized, “These defendants have instilled fear throughout Queens County.”

Allegedly leading this gang is 21-year-old Javon “Shady” Atapoku, who is accused of arming local teenagers and directing them on violent missions.

Atapoku is said to reside in Queens Village, a location that’s become known as “Shadyville” among gang members. The acts of violence attributed to him and the gang have often occurred in broad daylight, putting innocent lives at risk.

Gunfire erupted during the day in public places, including fast-food restaurants, busy roads, and near schools, impacting bystanders and residents alike.

“This group showed no concern about the consequences of their actions, whether near schools, playgrounds, or residential areas,” Katz remarked.

One defendant, a 20-year-old named Sean Chan, earned the nickname “Brightlight” due to his willingness to shoot in daylight. Other gang members, like Mekhi “Scarfax” Hoey and Jeff “Havok” Joseph, range in age from 18 to 21.

Notably, nine of the defendants were under 18 when they supposedly committed these violent acts.

In one incident from September 2024, a then-15-year-old allegedly shot at a rival gang member during an argument near a busy intersection, resulting in catastrophic injuries to innocent bystanders.

William Alcindor, a 66-year-old grandfather, was tragically killed, while a 23-year-old woman suffered severe injuries that left her with lasting effects. “This exemplifies senseless violence that produces innocent victims. People want nothing to do with this,” said Katz.

The defendants face a combined 97 charges, including murder and conspiracy. Six of them could potentially receive life sentences.

“For years, these gang members have terrorized neighborhoods in Queens, turning them into unsafe environments while boasting about their actions online,” noted NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch. “Today’s indictment is a step toward restoring safety in our communities.”

She concluded, “Thanks to the dedicated efforts of NYPD investigators, Queens is much safer today.”
