Cracker Barrel abandons Americana as customers urge boycott over famous brand shift

Cracker Barrel Faces Backlash Over Branding Changes

Cracker Barrel is reportedly considering a shift in branding after recent updates that have caused quite a stir among consumers.

Concerns regarding the company have sparked around 500,000 posts on social media, with a growing number of individuals calling for boycotts.

A movement urging people to reconsider their loyalty to the brand gained traction, drawing over 410,000 views and spotlighting decisions that many consumers found upsetting.

“I think what’s crucial is that we’re paying attention to our customers. Everything we’re doing is for them,” said the CEO, possibly attempting to calm rising tensions.

Customers quickly spotted alterations to the iconic logo, which has seen the removal of the familiar imagery—a country man seated by a barrel. Notably, the barrel itself is gone too, leaving behind just a stark black-and-yellow “Cracker Barrel” text.

Changes also reflect in the company’s website, which has adopted a new layout that bears a resemblance to a more modern, yet less inviting, store environment.

One user shared an satirical review of the revamped store design, noting that much of the beloved knickknack clutter has been stripped away, replaced with stark white walls. The once charming decor, including tools and historical signs, seems to have vanished.

As discussions continued, many directed their ire towards CEO Julie Fels Messino, who is at the helm of these transformations.

In an interview on “Good Morning America,” Messino made reassuring statements. “The important thing is that we’re listening to our guests. We’ve got the classic elements still—like the rocking chairs and the fireplace—everything that embodies Cracker Barrel is still in place.”

Despite these reassuring words, consumers are not satisfied, easily digging up concerns about the brand’s recent direction.

The company’s “Culture and Inclusion” page highlights various initiatives focused on promoting diversity and inclusion, some of which have been met with skepticism, such as programs aimed at advancing Black leaders and supporting Hispanic and Latino cultures.

Additionally, there’s a push toward enhancing connections with the LGBTQ+ community alongside efforts to empower women in the workplace.

Messino became CEO in 2023, so she was also responsible when the brand decided to sponsor the Nashville Gay Pride Event in 2024, a detail that has raised some eyebrows.

Even Donald Trump Jr. chimed in, expressing bewilderment at the company’s current direction by asking, “What’s wrong with Cracker Barrel?”

These branding changes, including the removal of a beloved mascot and logo, signal a shift that many feel is not in line with their preferences.

As of yet, Cracker Barrel has not provided any comments regarding the ongoing controversies.
