Cracker Barrel Responds to Customer Feedback with Major Changes
Cracker Barrel is making headlines as it reveals a series of updates, largely in response to customer reactions, including a return to its beloved homemade biscuits and a withdrawal from diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
On Wednesday, the restaurant chain announced it would reintroduce its homemade biscuits, promising that these treats will be “hand rolled and baked all day.” The company emphasized on social media that it’s committed to delivering the best food experience possible, underscoring that the return of these biscuits is a key focus. “We heard when you said the biscuits weren’t the same anymore,” Cracker Barrel stated. “We want to ensure they’re better than you remember—freshly baked throughout the day.”
In addition to the biscuit news, Cracker Barrel indicated a shift in its approach to social justice issues. It’s made clear that it no longer has DEI roles or requirements within the company. Hiring, promotions, and rewards will be based strictly on abilities and performance rather than factors such as race or other protected categories. Furthermore, the chain has committed to not sponsoring events unrelated to its core business, including pride events.
The company also revealed that its employee benefits program has never included sex reassignment or “partner care” provisions.
These developments follow recent backlash against a logo redesign that was poorly received by many customers. Cracker Barrel stated that it had been reconsidering plans to renovate its restaurant locations due to the feedback it received.
A company spokesperson remarked, “We’ve listened to our guests and remain committed to providing generous portions of comfort food and the warm hospitality we pride ourselves on.” They also noted that any concerns about restaurant renovations can be eased—if a location hasn’t been remodeled yet, it won’t be happening in the near future.
Interestingly, while only four out of 660 locations underwent remodeling so far, the company pledged to halt any future modifications that strayed from its Americana-style décor. A notable point of contention with customers was the recent effort to modernize the chain’s aesthetic, moving away from its signature decorations.
The decision to change the iconic logo, which featured a prominent image of an old man with a barrel, had also stirred disappointment among Cracker Barrel’s loyal fans. The new design aimed for simplicity but was met with significant resistance.
In closing, Cracker Barrel reassured its customers that the charm of “vintage Americana” remains, with familiar features like rocking chairs and cozy fireplaces still a part of the experience.
