Cracker Barrel fans are saddened as the chain removes its beloved vintage decor.

Some loyal Cracker Barrel customers are expressing their sadness over changes to the chain, arguing that the more contemporary updates may strip away the beloved Southern charm that has drawn diners for years.

The Tennessee-based restaurant, known for its famously comforting dishes like chicken fried steak and grits, is shifting away from its nostalgic kitsch and wooden rocking chairs, opting instead for a cleaner, modern look.

“It felt like I was stepping into someone else’s home,” remarked Sharon Triana, a frequent visitor.

“Now, opening up the walls and brightening the colors just feels… cold,” Triana added in a conversation with a journal.

Cracker Barrel faced criticism after introducing rainbow-painted rocking chairs to celebrate Pride, but the backlash intensified with CEO Julie Felss Masino’s announcement of a dining room remodel last summer.

By early May, about 40 out of approximately 660 locations had completed some of these updates, according to reports.

The company did not respond when asked for comments about these changes.

Rachel Love shared her disappointment through a viral TikTok video, believing that what she saw during a recent visit was just a light freshening up. But upon returning for Easter, she discovered the white paint was here to stay, along with new furniture replacing the old, familiar decor.

“It felt like a broken heart,” Love confessed. Her 14-year-old son was also upset.

Felss Masino, who assumed her role in July 2023, suggested that such negative feelings stem from nostalgia associated with the brand.

“People have emotional connections to what they know,” she told an audience earlier this month.

Many fans are nostalgic for the traditional decor and ambiance of the chain.

Speculation is that classic decorations at Cracker Barrel’s headquarters in Lebanon, Tennessee, are being put into storage or possibly sold off.

Yet, some employees, like DT from North Carolina, see the renovations positively.

“I was genuinely impressed,” she mentioned, noting the new lighting, simpler decorations, and improved layout made it easier for customers to navigate.

“Restaurants with a strong identity can face a bit of an identity crisis,” DT commented. “But I think some of the reactions may be overblown.”

Julie Bida, a Colorado traveler who frequents Cracker Barrel on her road trips, expressed a preference for the updated, less cluttered, and brighter interior but also cautioned against going too far with the changes.

“Your name is Cracker Barrel, so I’m really tied to the nostalgia,” she said.
