Recent reports indicate that some Cracker Barrel patrons have noticed discrepancies in menu items, coinciding with a recent controversy over the chain’s logo redesign.
The Wall Street Journal highlighted on Tuesday that regular customers are voicing concerns about the quality of meals and changes to the menu.
To streamline kitchen operations and cut costs, the restaurant has altered some of its processes. For instance, instead of making dough from scratch, Cracker Barrel now prepares and chills its signature biscuits in bulk. Additionally, sides like green beans are now cooked in the oven rather than on the stovetop, and food is reheated as needed.
In August, the chain introduced a new logo, replacing the familiar image of an older man in overalls by a barrel with a simpler design featuring just the name “Cracker Barrel.” This change faced significant backlash, including criticism from former President Donald Trump, who deemed it a “mistake,” as reported by Breitbart News.
The WSJ quoted a 73-year-old long-time customer stating that the food quality has declined compared to previous years.
Craig Watkins expressed a particular frustration: “I want pure syrup on my pancakes, not watered-down junk syrup.” To address this, he often brings his own syrup when dining out.
In August, social media users posted pictures of what they claimed to be food ordered from Cracker Barrel, further fueling the discussion.
Financial topics highlighted a list of items that should be avoided at Cracker Barrel, derived from customer reviews, stating:
Cracker Barrel may want to consider adding more seafood options, as the Friday Fish Fry has been criticized as the second-worst dish by Tasting Table, noted for its soft and mushy texture. If you’re in the mood for fish and chips, it might be best to visit a dedicated seafood restaurant instead of Cracker Barrel.
…
While Cracker Barrel surely serves some appealing comfort food at prices comparable to fast food, not everything on the menu is a hit.
In August, Breitbart News correspondent John Nolte reported that Cracker Barrel’s CEO, Julie Fels Masino, openly acknowledged her efforts to implement what she termed a “woke coup” against the restaurant’s traditional culture.
However, following feedback from former President Trump suggesting a change, the chain returned to its previous, cherished logo.
As noted by the WSJ, the chain is now focused on enhancing the quality of its food offerings.
